The Pike Place Market Education Program was created by the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA) to link Seattle-area schools with the Pike Place Market, one of the oldest continuously-operated farmers markets in the United States.
Since it was created in 1992, the program has taught more than 25,000 Seattle elementary school students about Pike Place Market’s original farmers market, its unique history and wide array of businesses.
In the 2014-2015 school year, the program had hosted more than 100 classes for the first time, serving approximately 2,300 students and reaching roughly 46% of all Seattle Public Schools’ elementary or K-8 schools.
Seattle-area second through fifth-grade teachers may sign up to formally participate in the school program. What does formal participation mean? It involves a presentation in the classroom; use of a resource kit; and three weeks later, a structured tour lead by volunteer School Program Leaders.
Tours are offered Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 am to noon. There is no charge, though it is highly encouraged that classes do food drives for the Pike Market Food Bank. Each tour is limited to one class, or two small (up to 35 students) classes, to maintain the personal nature of the Market experience.
For those teachers who cannot formally participate in the School Program, classes are still welcome to come to the Market, of course.
